Who am I?

I was born in Washington, Pennsylvania. I lived there until my Dad’s passing on December 31, 1994, after which we moved to New Matamoras, Ohio. This is where music started becoming a significant influence in my life.

I was about 11-12 years old when I heard my brother playing the song “Old Rugged Cross” on the piano for the first time. That moment was when the sound of music started truly inspiring me.

My brother had a unique blues/Southern Gospel way of playing instruments, which sparked my interest. From that moment on, I started to listen to cassette tapes and attempt to play along with them on the piano.

We could never afford music classes or training, so my brothers and I learned to play by ear. I wanted to challenge myself and learn from the “greats” of the music industry, including everyone from Beethoven to Christian pianist Anthony Burger. I soon began challenging my abilities and would play blindfolded so that I couldn’t look at the keys. It was a new way for me to improve my focus!

Robert Roux explains how his love for Christ and music collide in weekly chapel.

I now teach my three-year-old son how to play piano. He studies posture, and even knows his sharps and flats!  As I battle polycystic kidney disease, I make sure to still provide all the time I can to give my son the knowledge I’ve learned through the years.

I will be sure to give him the training he needs to reach for the stars. However, the main thing I want him to learn is that no matter how much he learns or improves on the keys or any other instrument, he does it all for God’s glory!

My favorite thing about CHM…

There are so many things I love about CHM. It’s a ministry that keeps God in the center, members as the top priority, and has a chapel service once a week to spiritually reflect.

Additionally, the CHM family been there to share the medical bills for my condition, which has been such a wonderful blessing. Therefore, I do my best to work fast and efficiently for our members. I know how much joy I have when CHM shares my eligible medical costs, and I want our members to have the same joy when they encounter medical needs.

I believe God blessed us with the gift to bless others and bring light to their day.

What has performing at our chapel service meant to you?

Music is such a wonderful ministry. I’m honored to get to share the gift God has blessed me with as I serve others. We are able to make a joyful noise to the Lord for His glory!

I also appreciate the opportunities it’s given me to bond and connect in community with my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. I believe God blessed us with the gift to bless others and bring light to their day.

My favorite scripture…

Proverbs 17:22

A joyful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit dries up the bones. (BSB)

This verse is important to me because of my battle with my health condition. I always remain upbeat and joyful to give the “good medicine” of a merry heart to others who are battling hard times in their life. I hope my outlook reminds them that no matter how rough the road is ahead, they can slow down and remember God is in control.

When you make a joyful noise to the Lord, you share the “good medicine” of gladness to others. Plus, the best part of this medicine is that it’s free and doesn’t need a doctor’s note! It all starts with a single smile to overcome the negativity.
