Luke 5:17-26 relates the story of the paralytic man who was lowered through the roof by his friends. What a sight to behold! People so thick they couldn’t even enter the house where Jesus was. Four men up on a roof, so full of faith that Jesus could heal their friend, tearing it apart to lower their friend inside.
They didn’t give up on their friend—stopping when there wasn’t an obvious way in and letting doubt hinder their actions. Instead, they trusted Jesus, and their formerly paralytic friend walked out of that house, leaving everyone who witnessed the miracle in utter awe.
CHM members are living out that same faith in their lives through their participation in CHM.
Before the four friends could think of carrying their paralytic friend to Jesus, they had to have faith and trust that Jesus could heal Him. To reap the blessings of membership in the CHM family, members need to have the same level of trust that God’s ways are firm and far better than societal norms.
This trust is what brings members together to follow the biblical command of bearing one another’s burdens. Members are in a covenant with one another, similar to the covenant God has with humanity. This trust in God’s ways compels CHM members to care about their fellow members the same way the paralytic’s friends did and to support them with the same fervency.
Bringing their friends in need to the feet of Jesus
CHM is a ministry, first and foremost; that’s why members are so passionate about supporting each other through prayer, cards of encouragement and extra giving to the Prayer Page. In so doing, they become the four friends from the Bible who were carrying the paralytic person to Jesus. CHM members who have never met unite to pick up corners of the mat and carry their fellow member burdened with medical difficulties to the Ultimate Healer.
However, the individual of our CHM story has more than four friends. CHM members across the United States lay their fellow members at the feet of Christ—a Christian family of hundreds of thousands of believers, all lowering their burdened friend through the roof to see Jesus.
Bringing glory to God
Luke 5:26 states, “Amazement seized them all [the other people in the crowd], and they glorified God and were filled with awe, saying, ‘We have seen extraordinary things today.’” Again and again, members report the wonder and amazement they receive from doctors, billing offices, friends and family as they share how the Body of Christ has helped them with their medical bills.
Through your giving, prayers and faithfulness, you’re spreading the love of Christ to places you never thought of, in ways you never imagined. Such is the power of God: to take our humble offerings and multiply them a thousand-fold.
