What to expect when your healthcare provider won't give a discount (or sets a discount deadline)

As a CHM member, it’s an important step to ask your provider for discounts! Many times providers have automatic discounts for self-pay patients. Other times, you may have to ask your provider for discounts before they’ll apply one to your account. However, there may be situations in which special circumstances apply.

What if my provider won’t give me a medical bill discount?

If you’ve asked your provider for a discount and they refuse to give you one, don’t worry: CHM will still share your medical bills. Submit your Sharing Request Packet along with your itemized bills, and our team will handle the rest. Our Member Advocate team can work with your provider to negotiate discounts on your behalf.

What if my provider requires upfront payment?

In some situations, providers may ask for upfront payment. If that occurs, call the CHM staff at 1-800-791-6225 and they will be happy to walk you through the next steps.

What if my provider sets a deadline for my medical bill discount?

If your provider sets a deadline for a significant discount or a discount on a large bill, follow these steps:

  • Mark the discount deadline on your itemized bills.
  • Submit your Sharing Request Packet and itemized medical bills. The Member Portal (portal.chministries.org) is the quickest and most secure method of submitting bills.
  • Call the CHM staff and let them know about the discount and the deadline.

If your bill is over $1,000, please don’t pay upfront unless you have talked to the CHM staff. If you pay upfront, negotiations for discounts cease and the opportunity to get any further discounts is lost.
