As the cost of healthcare for self-employed people like my wife and I skyrocketed, my CPA recommended I research CHM. I’d also heard several years earlier about CHM from my dentist, who praise the concept. I liked the idea of a faith-based community organized to assist its members with medical bills.

One day, I was 15 minutes into my morning exercise in my basement when I experienced flu symptoms (nausea, headache, etc.), as well as sluggishness in my legs, trouble breathing, and increasing fatigue.

I woke my wife, Jean, and asked her to take me to the emergency room. I was feeling progressively worse and passed out twice.

She drove me to the ER where they quickly diagnosed me as having a heart attack and immediately transported me to a better-equipped hospital. I had severe narrowing in three of my primary arteries, requiring surgery and stents.

During a “brush with death” emergency, you don’t think about how you’re going to pay. At the ER, I was never asked if I could afford the care they provided—they focused on saving my life. I’d never used CHM for any medical expenses since joining in 2017, and I really didn’t know if they’d share my heart attack bills.

I called CHM and spoke with a representative who instructed me on what billing information I needed and how to upload it to the Member Portal. I was truly amazed and deeply humbled when CHM shared 100% of my eligible medical bills!

After the stent placement, I physically felt as good, if not better, than I did prior to the heart attack. My cardiologist tested me for long-term heart muscle damage and said it was very minimal. I’m back to exercising five days a week, including strength training and cardio (walking) and I’m optimistic about my heart health for years to come.

I’m eternally grateful to CHM for assisting with my medical bills. I’m now a true believer in the mission of CHM and how they carry out that mission in the healthcare industry. I don’t know how to repay CHM for what they did for me except to sing their praises whenever the opportunity arises.
