For many of us, the very sound of the word Christmas brings a unique sense of excitement. From the lights and decorations to the familiar melodies and narratives, the spirit of the season and the message of Christmas is one of great joy and hope for all. Even in a world often filled with weariness and despair, the celebration of Christmas offers everyone the opportunity to remember, celebrate, and receive the greatest gift ever given: Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world!
Luke 2:1-21 gives us a detailed account of what we call Christmas, the long-awaited birth of God’s Son as prophesied in the Old Testament. An angel proclaimed the good news of Christ’s birth to the shepherds, and was then joined by a large heavenly group that praised God saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.”
Like those who looked forward to the coming of the promised Savior for thousands of years, today, we celebrate the fulfillment of that promise and sing, “Joy to the world, the Lord has come!”
Many of us will participate in the tradition of gathering to celebrate with family, friends, and co-workers throughout this Christmas season. We’ll attend events, give gifts, and enjoy mealtimes together. However, as we participate in these festivities, let’s be intentional about letting “every heart prepare Him room” so that we may be enabled to truly celebrate the spirit of the season and show kindness and generosity to those who are in need or less fortunate.
On behalf of the entire CHM team: from our homes to yours, we wish you a very blessed and joyous Christmas and Happy New Year!
