When it comes to our healthcare, we’re our own best advocates.

I had a surgery to correct ear problems. My wife, Suzanne, called to ask about costs and discovered the one-hour outpatient surgery was $66,000 but could be discounted to $53,000.

The high price flabbergasted us.  We called again the next day, thinking it had to be a mistake—but it wasn’t. A second representative gave us the same price and discount.

We found a hospital in Raleigh quoting the same surgery for $15,000. They offered additional discounts for upfront payment, reducing the cost to only $4,328!

The hospital was a five-hour drive for us, but we wanted to be prudent with fellow members’ money.

We drove to Raleigh on a Monday, met that afternoon with the surgeon for pre-op, stayed overnight, and had surgery on Tuesday morning. We drove home that afternoon. In doing so, we saved over $49,000.

God gave us His supernatural peace, both about the surgery and the cost. We were truly blessed by our Christian brothers and sisters. The biblical principle of "bearing one another's burdens" was something of which we wanted to be a part.

Shortly after launching my own business, I heard about CHM on The Ramsey Show. After researching the ministry, I joined.

Several months later, I noticed a bulge on my stomach. It was a hernia, and my doctor suggested repairing it quickly to prevent more damage.

Local prices for hernia repair range from $5,000 to $25,000; I found an outpatient clinic charging just below $6,000. It was a blessing to save CHM members nearly $20,000!

The recovery went well, and I’m back to full strength.

It’s good to know that when you call CHM, you talk to a real person who will pray with you. The sharing format is easy and it just makes sense. CHM is such a blessing.

As a car salesman, I drive my wife, Denise, crazy by assuming everything is negotiable. I brought this same mindset to our medical bills.

One evening, I felt like an elephant sat on my chest. Testing revealed I had a heart attack and needed a quintuple bypass.

I felt like I was letting my family down. I was supposed to take care of them, and now someone would be taking care of me. How would I provide for them, and how was my work going to be affected?

Everything was a blur that evening up to my surgery the next day. A lot goes through your mind when you think there’s a chance you might not wake up tomorrow.

When I woke up from the surgery, the doctors told me it went well.

Recovery was tough. We’re an active family, but I required rest. The chest soreness was the biggest hurdle. Once that subsided, I started with short walks around our property, which grew to four-mile walks with Denise.

CHM’s online medical bill submission process was easy; I used the free Member Portal to submit bills and communicate with CHM. I called my healthcare providers to remind them that I was a self-pay patient, and the result was over $210,000 in discounts.

Navigating the uncertainties of my experience, I learned that my worries were for naught; God provided for us, and CHM staff and members took great care of me and my family.
